Re-focus

Well I have been silent on here for some time. My brother is taking a break (new girlfriend.. lol) and most of our friends seem to be also. So I haven’t played as much the past few months.

A while back, I posted about with limited play time the need to find focus. My idea then was to Focus on my Hunter, leveling my Feral Druid, and my Twink Rogue. My idea for my Druid was to tank. I have discussed before about liking the idea of my Druid and that still persists. I really like looking at my characters and playing a druid does not satisfy that want. Also I found I do not like tanking. Sure playing a cat and saving the day by popping bear form when the tank dies is pretty cool, but full time.. not my cup of tea. I just don’t really want to learn a new playstyle. So for endgame, I will stay DPS. I like questing, dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds with my Hunter just fine.

But I do still love low level PvP and tinkering with other toons at low level in general. Hence the birth of the Night Song Brigade and the alteration of the blog’s name. So I am going to create a small stable of level 24 alts that I can play around with and twink for the 20-24 bracket. I work and have a family, so I only play about 7–10 hours a week and dont have time for the constant gear grind. I would rather twink and be geared than the constant carrot on a stick Blizzard makes you chase. This is exactly why I have become interested in Twinking in general and why this specific bracket appeals to me and not 70s. I have just 1 level 85 and do not care to learn to master or gear any alt classes at high level. But with low level toons, I can branch out from my main’s class. Also with my limited play time I have no desire to sit in long queues that any bracket other than 20-24s and 70-74s have.

I still have to fight my urge to play Blood Elves to stay focused. If ever do give in.. I will probably level a Belf Rogue for PvP only since I am having so much fun with my 24 Rogue.

Druid forms…

Having decided to go ahead and level my druid, I was talking to my brother the other day (I will call him Vallas here after his druid main from now on) about thinking that one of the reasons I never leveled this guy is because you spend all your time in forms and never ‘see’ the character progress. Vallas shared that was always one of the things that frustrated him the most was never really seeing his druid’s gear. For my part, when I was originally leveling my bear, it was back in Burning Crusade and I was very disatisfied with the old feral forms. The feral forms are much better now. I am not too concerned about seeing my gear. On Faerondil (my hunter), I am loving tranmog. I tend to like older, simpler models for my gear, especially on a Worgen. But I would like a little more customization for my feral forms so I can feel somewhat unique in-game.

Here are a few things we discussed:

Character Customization – I think the changes you make at the character creation screen or in the barber’s chair should effect how your Bear and Cat forms appear. Right now only the skin’s coloration changes based on hair color. Skin tone could change the color of the marking or mane, face could change the beastial faces, hairstyle could change the size and shape of ears, and facial hair could add braided tufts of hair or braided goatees.

Make animal forms were-forms – Vallas would like to see the forms changed to be more like the Worgen werewolf form. So when you switch into Bear or Cat form, you become a Werebear/Werecat. Also when you switch to travel form you would become a Werecheetah and get down on all fours like Running Wild. Then your gear could be shown even in a shape shifted form. He also would like to see a cooldown like Tree of Life where you switch into an pure savage animal form with some decent combat modifiers.

Have the bling/markings scale with iLevel – Currently Bear and Cat form have a bit of tribal markings and bling. What if you got more marking/bling or what you do have gets bigger, more ornate, or glows more as your item level increases?

Also to me, Bear form really needs to be a bit larger. I’d say about 50%. Maybe size could scale by character level. Say 5% every 10 levels above 30 so at level 80 you top out at 150% the current size.

Attention Dungeon Finder Tools… Beware the Hunter!

Yesterday I read a post of Frostheim’s from Warcraft Hunters Union on WoW Insider about 5 things other classes could learn from hunters. Oh.. the irony of how sometimes things you read are relevent far sooner than you think.. Part of the post talks about how with our tool kit a great hunter can often save a party and a bad one can really screw one over.. Well also a hunter who knows his tool kit can also screw over a group that pisses him off! I may not be a great hunter, but I am fairly familiar with my tool kit… /evil grin.

Last night my brother and I were doing our weekly Hour of Twilight heroic runs, since we can’t seem to get anyone else to do 10 man normal modes with us (future post to explain) and neither of us like Raid Finder (see earlier post on my feelings, his mirror mine.. lol). Now keep in mind on Thursdays when my brother and I run together, I go over and hang out with him. We are in the same room, so no need for vent or anything. We do this because ever since BC the two of us (at least) have always been committed to running together. So in other words he has my back and I his.

Sooooo.. last night we queue up for our first HoT heroic for the night and get Well of Eternity. Which BTW I love.. it’s not that too challenging but the scenery is awesome! So in we go following Illidan. Now my brother has a huge computer desk-wall unit thingy with a big sidebar and I play on a laptop. So I just put my laptop on the sidebar. Also I do not use a mouse-pad with my wireless optical mouse. I just move it over the wood. I don’t like being restricted to a little pad. When I am raiding or PvPing that mouse is all over the place.. LOL. We are running up to the first group of demons and it seems the side bar is gummy, which is annoying the hell outta me cause my mouse isn’t moving as freely as I am accustomed to. So not paying attention to the screen, I run into the marching demons and die. A bit later the priest posts in party chat ‘run back.. cause I don’t rez retards’. My brother is on his warrior tank instead of his pally. Normally he would rez me. So he is waiting to pull until I am rezzed or get back on my own, We were actually laughing about it at this point even though he was pissed the healer wouldn’t rez me. Well then the rogue pulls the pack at the first crystals and my bro lets him die. Then he tells the rogue  ‘you pull.. you tank’. By the way the rest of the group consists of a rogue, priest, and warlock all from the same guild. Then the rogue and priest start talking about what a crappy tank my brother is (not true) doesn’t know how to pull.. too slow.. blah.. blah.. blah. Also dropping f bombs name calling. Then they try to kick him. It fails.. I thought you only needed 3, but not sure.. or maybe their warlock (who was quiet and had very subpar DPS) felt bad about it. So anywaaay.. I am thinking to myself ‘Oh, now it’s on bitches!’. You want to be a tool.. free with the insults, slurs and slander, I will be more than generous with the misdirects and feign death! Oh yeah!.. And hey mr. priest that called me a retard, the first one already has your name on it >;-) muahamuahmuahahahahahaha!!!

Anyway.. after few minutes of hunter imposed demonic death and destruction (along with frustration about not being able to kick us since everytime the cooldown is up my brother or I initiate one against one of them).. they dropped group. All I gotta say is ‘Guys.. I hope you enjoy your repair bills and long queues’.. and oh.. ‘you’re very welcome!’

PS.. Maybe I shouldn’t have done this, but my tolerance for douchbaggery in WoW is at an all time low.

A Social Game?

I have seen some talk on other blogs about WoW as a social network, guild survival, and opening up more options for grouping. Here are my thoughts:

To combat long queue lines for certain activities first Blizzard gave us cross-server Battlegrounds, then Dungeon Finder, and now Raid Finder. All these have hurt the server based communities and/or guilds each in their own way to some degree. Blizzard needs to strike a balance between allowing us to play with whomever we want, giving us quick queue times for our desired play, and nurturing the server and guild communities.

I believe the way they can accomplish both is by tearing down walls but putting up fences:

Tear down these walls to allow us to play with anyone we want:

Give us Battletags now: RealID is great, but there is no one on my RealID friends list that I don’t know outside of the game. Sure some of these I met through the game but became friends with and communicate with outside the game by email, facebook, or phone. If I meet someone in Dungeon Finder that I think is cool and would like to play more with, I am not going to just give out my RealID info. Battletags would allow me to tear down a wall that I am not otherwise willing to do.

Create Battle.net guilds. These could simply be guilds such as we have now but extend past server barriers or could be guild alliances of server based guilds. Both PvE and PvP guilds could benefit from this. So if I have friends who play on another server, sure I can invite them by RealID, but what if our 2 guilds could be joined into a Battle.net guild? Then I could invite other members of that guild even if my friends were not on. PvP guilds could join forces and queue up together.

Open cross faction grouping for instanced dungeons and raids. I have some real life friends that play mostly horde. My main is alliance. Why can’t we all help Thrall take down Deathwing together? Also I think it would be awesome to do this for PvP. Being able to not only group with your same faction friends but also with cross faction friends to face-off in the same battleground.

Integrate the forums and armory pages better. Make my toons armory page more like a Facebook profile so if I post on the forums it shows on my armory and I can add some sort of status updates. Guild armory pages whould be done similarly. Allow some sort of Facebook or Twitter tie-in if I choose to do so.

Put up these fences to nurture the server and guild communities:

Allow membership in up to 3 server based guilds. My reasoning is you could stay in your casual social guild but still join a focused raiding and/or PvP guild to pursue those interests without leaving your in-game friends to do so. All 3 guild chats could be displayed at all times. Which guild is displayed under your name? They could have the guild tab function like the talents tab, you activate which one you want to use. This would also affect which guild bank you can access, where your rep gains go and so on.

Allow the current tier of raid to be accessed cross-server but limit feats of strength and achievements for first kills to only server exclusive groups.

Have server exclusive non-instanced content such as World Bosses, Holiday Bosses, and updated Wintergrasp and Tol Barad. I see why Blizzard may not want to spend dev time to making new WG/TBs but keep these 2 up to date and relevent to level cap characters. Level-cap World bosses spread out through the entire game world would get us out of the cities, cause us to group up, and even encite world PvP. These all would be great little side activities that if we want to participate ensures we need to socialise with our home server.

Guild improvements would be great. I would love to have guild housing, a place to hang out with your guildies, access guild vendors, and post to some sort of bulletin board. Check out wowinsider.com. They have a great article about needed improvements to the guild system.

Those Darn Belfs!

Curse you Sin’ Dorei.. Last night after running the Hour of Twilight heroics with my guildies, I decided to visit Shattrath just for nostalgia. Back during Burning Crusade, I spent so many hours there.  So tooling around I think ‘hey… I also spent a ton of time on Quel’ Danas. Let’s go check it out!’.  Mistake. It puts my new commitment to focus on just 3 characters to the test. By and large I greatly prefer the Alliance to the Horde.. but, I simply love blood elves. The lore, music, scenery, and architecture are just awesome! Eversong woods is simply breathtaking…  As much as I love Gilneas and Teldressil,  Quel’ Thalas is my favorite starter zone overall.

Be strong, must stay away from Blood Elves

Focus

In my time playing WoW, I have drifted from focusing on this or that thing at various times. From raiding, to PvP, to quest leveling alts, to building twinks; I have went from one activity to another. But actually thinking of my WoW history, it would seem that by definition I have lacked focus…

My playtime is limited by choice. I have a 4 year old son from a failed marriage that deserves my attention. He lives with me full time. He is such a character and truly a gift. I am older and wiser than I was with my daughter and realize that I need to stop and smell the roses with him. I also have found an enchantress, who after a lifetime of subconciously searching for that face for every story or song, fulfills my every romantic dream. She is truly my best friend and always was the prettiest girl I have ever seen. She is my friend, my lover, my muse… So for their sake and mine I choose to enjoy Warcraft with moderation.

So lately I have been giving some thought on what do I really want to do with my WoW time. There have been a couple of stretches that I was totally obsessed with raiding. A shortime ago I was infatuated with twinking in the 24s bracket and was working on a several toons for that. At some point I may return to those. What I have always enjoyed most is running with friends, dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds. I have always loved my hunter and the idea of my druid. My brother and I have a small guild, <Kindred> with a few friends still playing WoW. So for now I will be focusing on playing just three toons with my brother and friends, end-game raiding and dungeons on my hunter, leveling my bear druid through dungeon finder, and building my 24 twink rogue.  And I just may actually delete every other toon on my account….

Hello!

As the subtitle suggests this blog is about chronicling my musings about my jormey through the World of Warcraft. I am a fairly ecclectic person so my entries will probably be all over the place. Just whatever is on my mind at the time. I hope someone enjoys reading it…
