Raid Finder

I entered first half of Dragon Soul via Raid Finder for the first time last Thursday with Faerondil. My brother and some friends were running some vanilla raids, so I queued up solo.

I must say I like RF more in theory than in practice. Some thoughts:

First off, the queue as DPS is really quick.. probably less than 5 minutes. Which is great since queueing for heroics as a solo DPS usually takes me 30 minutes.

The difficulty is too far on the easy side. I understand why Blizz did this since it is a giant PuG with no communication outside of Raid chat. There is very little explaination of the fight or strategy discussion prior to the pull. Occassionally someone will post a raid warning telling what add to kill or something. For the most part though the instance is so easy that you don’t need much instruction.

Plenty of Douchebaggery abounds. Noob gets thrown around alot to anyone who dies to some fight mechanic, even though no one has explained any of the fight mechanics. In the Eye of Eternity, I was killed by an ice wave I did not see coming until it was too late. After some jerk proceeded to t-bag my toon’s corpse. But there was a nice healer who rezzed me once the fight was over before leaving the raid.

It also emphasized to me why I prefer 10 man raids to 25 man raids. There are so many people doing so much stuff that your screen is chaos, sensory overload.

Raid Finder has it’s place and definitely will help gear up a character. But is a poor substitute for raiding with 9 other friends or guildmates.

This may be a bit premature since I haven’t done the 2nd half of dragon soul, but the Hour of Twilight heroics are much more fun to me!

Those Darn Belfs!

Curse you Sin’ Dorei.. Last night after running the Hour of Twilight heroics with my guildies, I decided to visit Shattrath just for nostalgia. Back during Burning Crusade, I spent so many hours there.  So tooling around I think ‘hey… I also spent a ton of time on Quel’ Danas. Let’s go check it out!’.  Mistake. It puts my new commitment to focus on just 3 characters to the test. By and large I greatly prefer the Alliance to the Horde.. but, I simply love blood elves. The lore, music, scenery, and architecture are just awesome! Eversong woods is simply breathtaking…  As much as I love Gilneas and Teldressil,  Quel’ Thalas is my favorite starter zone overall.

Be strong, must stay away from Blood Elves

Hour of Twilight

Last night I ran the new Hour of Twilight heroics for the first time on Faerondil with my brother and Cerebral, a non-guild friend. We had a great time. My brother tanked on his Druid, Vallas. Cerebral is a mage extraordinaire. His DPS was top-notch. Mine was up and down. I still have alot of PvP gear and am not comfortable yet with my PvE SV rotation. The past year I have mostly PvPed as BM. Between quests and drops I got 4 pieces of 378 gear. A chest, belt, ring, and the Arrow of Time trinket. So now I should be geared well enough for the Raid Finder, although I would like to replace as much as possible of the 5 remaining PvP pieces I have.

All the instances have cool raid-like mechanics and are fairly challenging. End of Time was neat as you are fighting shades of famous NPCs such as Tyrande and Sylvanas. I think we wiped twice. In our group for this instance, we had ‘the healer who just stands in the poo all the time’ so that explains the wipes. Well of Eternity.. what can I say but absolutely stunning. It was alot of fun. Visually it is gorgeous, right up there with Magister’s Terrace as the best looking 5-man dungeon! The scenery is like a fusion of night elf and blood elf, with a little Mount Hyjal thrown in. Which makes sense, since at that time the blood elves (Highborne) were night elves. It was cool to return to some of the Northrend scenery in the Hour of Twilight. However, Well of Eternity was definitely my fave! Plus you get to roll with the ultimate WoW bad boy.. Illidan Stormrage!! I can’t wait to run that one some more..

After the run, I had a totally noob moment…  two of the dungeon quests reward 378 ranged weapons, a gun and a bow. Immediately upon seeing the gun I knew it was a tanking weapon and took it just for the vendor value and maybe transmog. However the bow I thought looked cool and would definitely be an upgrade from my 359 PvP bow. And we all know bows are always agility based hunter weapons that rogues like to ninja. So off I run to the AH to buy a flintlock’s woodchucker and apply it to the bow, only to realize (after applying said scope to said bow) that it too was a tanking weapon… DOH! That scope cost me $700+ gold. I felt like a retard. But WTF Blizz.. tanking ranged weapons, at least to me, always seemed to be guns not bows!!

Focus

In my time playing WoW, I have drifted from focusing on this or that thing at various times. From raiding, to PvP, to quest leveling alts, to building twinks; I have went from one activity to another. But actually thinking of my WoW history, it would seem that by definition I have lacked focus…

My playtime is limited by choice. I have a 4 year old son from a failed marriage that deserves my attention. He lives with me full time. He is such a character and truly a gift. I am older and wiser than I was with my daughter and realize that I need to stop and smell the roses with him. I also have found an enchantress, who after a lifetime of subconciously searching for that face for every story or song, fulfills my every romantic dream. She is truly my best friend and always was the prettiest girl I have ever seen. She is my friend, my lover, my muse… So for their sake and mine I choose to enjoy Warcraft with moderation.

So lately I have been giving some thought on what do I really want to do with my WoW time. There have been a couple of stretches that I was totally obsessed with raiding. A shortime ago I was infatuated with twinking in the 24s bracket and was working on a several toons for that. At some point I may return to those. What I have always enjoyed most is running with friends, dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds. I have always loved my hunter and the idea of my druid. My brother and I have a small guild, <Kindred> with a few friends still playing WoW. So for now I will be focusing on playing just three toons with my brother and friends, end-game raiding and dungeons on my hunter, leveling my bear druid through dungeon finder, and building my 24 twink rogue.  And I just may actually delete every other toon on my account….

Hello!

As the subtitle suggests this blog is about chronicling my musings about my jormey through the World of Warcraft. I am a fairly ecclectic person so my entries will probably be all over the place. Just whatever is on my mind at the time. I hope someone enjoys reading it…
